Welcome to the 2012 49er European Championships

Fraglia Vela Riva and the International 49er Class cordially invite you to attend the Seiko 49er European Championship to be held 8th - 15th Sept 2012 on Lake Garda, Italy.  On this website, you'll find:

  • Official Notice of Race.
  • Online Registration.
  • A listing of current entrants.
  • Information regarding the site

Fraglia Vela is situated in Riva Del Garda, located in Riva, which is in the North West corner of Lake Garda in Northern Italy. The town of Riva is particularly attractive and has a wide range of shops, bars and interesting restaurants. For non-sailing friends there’s a lot to do on holiday including mountain biking, windsurfing hill climbing, canyoning, beach activities (pebbly), canoeing etc. The majority of which are all available within a short walk of the town centre. One of the features of this end of the lake (in Trentino) is that no motorboats are allowed (other than ferries or rescue boats) which helps to keep the noise levels down and the dreaded jet-skiers out of the picture. So if you have friends or relatives interested in “sharing” your holiday – bring them along.

49er European Championship
Schedule and Format

Format
The Championship will be in three parts

  1. Qualifying Races
  2. Fleet Races
  3. Final Races.

The Qualifying Races may include a long distance race with all boats racing together followed by qualifying races in fleets of approximately equal numbers of boats. Following the qualification races the fleets will be split into gold, silver and bronze fleets (depending on numbers).

The Fleet Races will take place in fleets of approximately equal numbers of boats, except that the top ten helmsmen from the 2012 Olympic Games will be invited first to be in the Gold fleet, regardless of whether they compete in the qualifying races or not. The Gold fleet will then be made up to 25 boats. These races will be run on a timed format for all races, rather than low scoring.

The Final Races will race the boats in overall positions, from the Gold fleet races and the top of the Silver fleet, 25th to 32nd, 17th to 24th, 9th to 16th and 1st to 8th in groups for the overall positions (1st to 32nd) in the Championship. It will be the intention to run these races in the “Theatre Style” format.

Final Races

  • The Low Points Scoring System of RRS Appendix A will apply to the Qualifying Races. Cumulative Timing will apply to the Fleet Races.
  • At least 4 races are required to be completed to constitute the Championship. When 5 or more races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score.
  • There will be a Final Races Series in FOUR groups to decide the positions 25th to 32nd, 17th to 24th, 9th to 16th and 1st to 8th overall.
  • The final round(s) will be of an experimental format.

Courses
For the Qualification and Fleet races the normal (30 minute) Windward - Leeward courses will be used, however if the weather conditions are suitable the first Qualification Race may be run as a Long Distance race around Lake Garda and of approximately TWO hours. If this race is held then this race will be used to determine the seeding for the first day of Qualifying.

Courses for the Final Races will be short Windward - Leeward courses with restricted width and of approximately 6 minutes long.

Timing
We will have tracking for the event – more information to come.

Adjustments will be made for premature starts and disqualifications
